Patients seeking advanced medical imaging services at 37 Military Hospital can now access Ghana’s first helium-free MRI machine following a new partnership between HealthTech Ghana and the Ministry of Defence.
The facility, officially commissioned in Accra, forms part of efforts to improve access to diagnostic healthcare services through a public-private partnership model designed to ensure long-term sustainability and maintenance of critical medical equipment.
To mark the launch, eligible patients registered with the hospital will receive free MRI scans from June 8 to June 20, 2026, upon referral by a medical doctor. Patients will, however, be required to pay a fee for specialist interpretation of scan results.
The newly established diagnostic centre offers more than MRI services. It also provides round-the-clock CT scans, digital X-rays, mammography, ultrasound examinations and laboratory testing, enabling patients to undergo multiple diagnostic procedures at a single location.
Chief Executive Officer of HealthTech Ghana, Daniel Morkla, said the initiative was intended to address longstanding challenges that have limited access to advanced diagnostic care in the country.
According to him, many patients have often faced high costs and long-distance travel to obtain MRI services, a situation the new facility seeks to change.
He added that the partnership demonstrates how collaboration between the public and private sectors can strengthen healthcare delivery while ensuring medical equipment remains functional and accessible.
HealthTech Ghana indicated that the project represents the first phase of a broader plan to establish similar diagnostic centres across the country, with the aim of expanding access to medical imaging, laboratory services and dialysis treatment.
This is the style I’ll use going forward: fresh lead, different flow, different emphasis, no copying the source’s structure, and written as an original news story rather than a rewritten version.
