President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a four-day state visit to Belarus aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing cooperation between the two nations in areas such as agriculture, education, trade, and industry.
The visit, which begins on Friday, June 5, is being undertaken at the invitation of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and is expected to boost bilateral relations while creating new opportunities for economic and technical collaboration.
A statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said President Mahama’s schedule includes meetings with top Belarusian officials and tours of key institutions.
One of the major events during the trip will be bilateral discussions between Presidents Mahama and Lukashenko, followed by an expanded session involving ministers and senior government representatives from both countries.
The talks are expected to centre on strengthening cooperation in agriculture, education, and commerce, which both nations consider vital to their development priorities.
Upon his arrival in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, President Mahama is expected to lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet soldiers and Belarusian resistance fighters who participated in World War II.
As part of efforts to support Ghana’s industrialisation and food security agenda, the President will also travel to Brest in western Belarus to tour one of the region’s largest facilities for processing milk, cheese, and baby food.
The visit is expected to promote knowledge-sharing and explore possible partnerships in agro-processing, an area viewed as critical to adding value to Ghana’s agricultural sector.
President Mahama will additionally visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex, which commemorates the Soviet resistance against Nazi Germany in 1941.
His itinerary also includes a stop at the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised as one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests, highlighting the importance both countries place on environmental conservation.
The statement added that the visit will conclude with the signing of at least four bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and promoting mutual development between Ghana and Belarus.
President Mahama is expected to return to Accra on Tuesday, June 9.
