Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as head coach of the Black Stars after Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz guided the national team during the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Ghana’s campaign came to an end after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 on Saturday.
The Portuguese tactician, who was appointed only weeks before the World Cup, confirmed his resignation in a statement shared on his social media platforms shortly after the team’s elimination.
Reflecting on his time in charge, Queiroz said football, like life, is about either winning or learning. He expressed pride in what the team achieved while admitting he had hoped for more, stressing that reaching new heights should be the foundation for even greater ambitions.
He also noted that the future success of the Black Stars would depend not only on performances on the pitch but also on creating the right environment to prepare, support and develop Ghana’s football talent.
Queiroz thanked the President of the Ghana Football Association and its board for the opportunity to lead the national team, describing it as an honour and privilege to serve Ghana.
He also expressed appreciation to his players and technical staff for their commitment, courage and dedication throughout the campaign.
Addressing supporters, he acknowledged the disappointment of the World Cup exit but said the team had represented Ghana with pride and helped restore the Black Stars’ respect and credibility on football’s biggest stage.
He ended his message by thanking Ghanaians for their support and wishing the team well for the future.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September for the start of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
