President John Dramani Mahama has extended congratulations to the Government and people of the United States on the occasion of the country’s 250th Independence anniversary, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, July 5, the President conveyed Ghana’s best wishes to the United States and described the anniversary as a fitting moment to celebrate the enduring friendship and cooperation shared by both countries.
In his message to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, President Mahama expressed confidence that Ghana and the United States would continue to deepen their partnership, anchored on shared democratic principles, the rule of law, respect for human rights and a common pursuit of economic growth.
He noted that these shared values have remained the foundation of the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries and would continue to foster closer cooperation in the years ahead.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that diplomatic ties between Ghana and the United States date back to 1957, when Ghana gained independence, with the U.S. becoming one of the first countries to establish formal diplomatic relations with the newly independent nation.
It added that over the past seven decades, the partnership has expanded across several sectors, including trade, investment, infrastructure development, education and cultural exchange.
The statement highlighted key collaborative initiatives such as the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), as well as ongoing cooperation in social development, trade and investment.
The Ministry also pointed to the long history of high-level diplomatic exchanges between the two countries, noting that former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama all paid official visits to Ghana. Likewise, several Ghanaian leaders, including Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President Mahama, have undertaken official visits to the United States.
It further acknowledged the strong people-to-people connections between Ghanaians and Americans, describing them as a key driver of closer educational, cultural and social ties.
President Mahama concluded his message by wishing the Government and people of the United States a peaceful, joyful and memorable celebration of their 250th Independence anniversary.
