Law enforcement officers have arrested Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba at the Accra International Airport, despite having been granted permission by the High Court to travel to the United Kingdom.
The arrest was announced by the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, in a post on his X account on Saturday.
According to Justice Srem Sai, Mr Aludiba is currently standing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the Republic. He had earlier been granted leave by the trial High Court to travel to the UK for a short period.
However, the Deputy Attorney-General alleged that Mr Aludiba attempted on Thursday to use fraudulent means to access funds in a frozen Republic Bank account, an action that led to his arrest at the airport.
“It was, however, Mr Aludiba’s attempt to use false means to empty his frozen bank account with Republic Bank on Thursday which occasioned tonight’s arrest,” Justice Srem Sai wrote.
He further disclosed that the Attorney-General is expected to return to court on Monday to seek a review of the High Court’s decision granting Mr Aludiba permission to travel outside the country.
“The learned Attorney-General will, on Monday, seek a review of the court order which granted Mr Aludiba leave to travel out of the country,” the post added.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to access the frozen account have not yet been detailed, and authorities are yet to provide further information on any additional charges that may arise from the incident.
Mr Aludiba remains in the custody of law enforcement authorities as investigations continue.
