Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed that cocaine worth more than $350 million, intercepted at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast in March 2025, has been destroyed following a court order.
The narcotics were hidden in a tipper truck loaded with sand and seized by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Appearing before Parliament’s Public Assurance Committee, Mr. Mubarak said the destruction was carried out under judicial authority, with video evidence submitted to the committee. “We cannot destroy any drugs without a court order, which we secured and have provided,” he explained.
The Minister stressed that the destruction of the cocaine does not affect the ongoing prosecution of suspects linked to the case. Three individuals, including the driver and a maid, are currently facing trial and have been granted bail. The case, last adjourned in April, was delayed by flooding on June 29 and awaits a new court date.
Authorities are also working with Interpol and using internal measures such as stop lists to track other suspects possibly connected to the trafficking network.
The seizure and destruction form part of Ghana’s broader efforts to clamp down on narcotics trafficking, a growing concern in the region. Mr. Mubarak assured Parliament that updates will be provided once the prosecution concludes.
