Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) Coordinator for the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, has raised concern over the increasing rate of new HIV infections among the gay community in the Bono Region.
Speaking to the media in Sunyani, Mr Bambilla disclosed that HIV prevalence among homosexuals in the region currently stands at 26 per cent, meaning 26 out of every 100 individuals in the group are living with the virus.
He also revealed that HIV prevalence among commercial sex workers in the region is six per cent, describing the infection rate among key populations, particularly gay men, as worrying.
According to Mr Bambilla, both homosexuals and commercial sex workers remain among the groups most vulnerable to HIV infection. He said the Ghana AIDS Commission is distributing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to individuals at high risk as part of efforts to reduce new infections.
He explained that PrEP is a highly effective medication that helps prevent HIV infection among vulnerable populations when used correctly.
Mr Bambilla also encouraged people living with HIV to adhere strictly to their treatment, noting that consistent use of antiretroviral medication for at least six months can achieve viral suppression.
He stated that Ghana has currently attained an 89 per cent viral suppression rate, adding that individuals who achieve viral suppression are far less likely to transmit the virus to others.
“The medication is working very effectively, and we are using it not only for treatment but also as a preventive measure,” he said.
