The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has cautioned the public against using banknotes to make money bouquets, stating that the practice is illegal and results in the defacement of the country’s legal tender.
In a notice issued on July 14, the Central Bank expressed concern over what it described as the increasing misuse of Ghana’s currency through unconventional practices.
According to the BoG, arranging currency notes into decorative bouquets constitutes improper handling and tampering with legal tender.
The Bank stressed that the Cedi is intended solely for use as a medium of exchange and should not be converted into decorative items, gifts, jewellery or artistic creations.
It further explained that the growing trend of presenting money bouquets at weddings, birthdays, graduation ceremonies and other celebrations often involves folding, stapling, piercing or otherwise altering banknotes, actions that can damage the currency.
The directive is expected to impact event planners and gift vendors who offer customised money bouquet services for special occasions.
