Ghana congratulates Senegal’s President Faye on ECOWAS chairmanship

Ghana has congratulated Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye on his election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), reaffirming its commitment to supporting his leadership of the regional bloc.

In a Facebook post on Monday, July 20, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa extended Ghana’s best wishes to President Faye following his election.

Ablakwa expressed confidence in the Senegalese leader’s ability to guide ECOWAS, wishing him wisdom, strength and success as he assumes the role.

“Ghana congratulates the newly elected Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal,” he stated.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also pledged Ghana’s continued cooperation, saying the country remains committed to working closely with President Faye to advance regional peace, stability and development.

“President Faye can always count on Ghana’s principled support and genuine cooperation,” he added.

President Faye was elected during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders met to discuss major political, economic and security challenges facing West Africa.

He succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the regional bloc as it confronts terrorism, political instability, economic integration challenges, and efforts to redefine relations with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
