Two arrested in Kumasi market drug bust
An intelligence-led police operation at Asawase Market in Kumasi has led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of a large quantity of suspected narcotic drugs concealed in fertiliser sacks.
The suspects, identified as Osman Bassein, 37, and Mohammed Abdul-Razak, 38, were apprehended on Monday, July 21, after police acted on information about a shipment allegedly transporting illegal substances into the market.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, officers from the Manhyia District Command, the Divisional CID and the Zongo Police Station carried out the operation and intercepted 13 fertiliser sacks suspected to be carrying the contraband.
A search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses uncovered 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves believed to be narcotic drugs. Police said the parcels had been carefully hidden among bales of second-hand clothing to avoid detection.
The suspected substances were documented and secured for further forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
Both suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigators. Police say they will be processed in accordance with the law once investigations are completed.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command praised members of the public whose information led to the operation and urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities through the police emergency lines.
Investigations into the source and intended destination of the suspected drugs are ongoing.
