Tema police reject GH¢150,000 bribe after seizing 5,000 parcels of suspected narcotics
Police in Tema have disclosed that officers rejected an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe offered by a suspect seeking the release of a truck carrying thousands of parcels of suspected narcotic substances seized during an intelligence-led operation.
The attempted inducement came after police intercepted a tipper truck at Afienya and discovered 5,039 compressed parcels believed to be narcotics concealed in the vehicle. The operation led to the arrest of two suspects, who have since been remanded into custody pending further investigations.
Speaking at a briefing on recent anti-crime operations in the region, Tema Regional Police Commander DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu said one of the suspects allegedly tried to persuade officers to release both the truck and its cargo by offering a cash bribe.
“Our officers rejected an alleged GH¢150,000 bribe offered by a suspect who sought the release of the truck carrying the suspected narcotic substances,” he stated.
DCOP Asiedu commended the officers involved, describing their actions as a reflection of the Police Service’s commitment to integrity and professionalism in the fight against organised crime.
He stressed that the Tema Regional Police Command remains focused on tackling criminal activities, including narcotics trafficking, armed robbery and other security threats across the region.
“The Tema Regional Police Command remains resolute, vigilant and fully committed to combating crime. We have strengthened intelligence gathering, patrols and collaboration with other security agencies. There will be no haven for criminals within this Region,” he said.
Police said the suspected narcotics remain in their custody while investigations continue. Authorities are also pursuing other individuals believed to be connected to the suspected drug trafficking network.
The latest seizure forms part of a broader crackdown on organised crime in the Tema Region, where security agencies have intensified efforts to disrupt narcotics operations and bring those involved to justice.
