Sabon Zongo: Two more suspects remanded over alleged lynching of 27-year-old

The Asokore Mampong District Court has remanded two more suspects in connection with the alleged lynching of 27-year-old Yusuf Zakari at Sabon Zongo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Their remand comes a week after the court ordered three other suspects into custody over the same incident.

Police said Zakari was allegedly assaulted by a group of people at a cattle kraal in Sabon Zongo on July 19, 2026, after being accused of stealing GH¢4,800. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Manhyia Government Hospital before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The first three suspects arrested were Moses Adoko, 37, a plumber; Abubakari Adams, 25, a herdsman; and Nurudeen Suleman, 35, a motor mechanic. They were earlier arraigned and remanded into police custody.

Police later arrested Mohammed Amadu, 21, and Halidu Issaka, 22, increasing the number of suspects in custody to five.

During their appearance before the Asokore Mampong District Court on Monday, July 27, 2026, prosecutors requested that the two accused be remanded to allow investigators to continue their work and pursue other suspects who remain at large.

Lawyer for the accused opposed the request, arguing that his clients were not flight risks and were willing to cooperate with the court whenever required.

Despite the objection, the court, presided over by Her Worship Hilder Esther Wryter, granted the prosecution’s request and remanded both men into custody.

They are scheduled to reappear in court on August 7, 2026, alongside the three other suspects already on remand.

Although dissatisfied with the ruling, defence lawyer Wilfred Nana Asabre Mensah said he respected the court’s decision.

The deceased’s mother, who attended the hearing, vowed to pursue the case until justice is served.
