Accra–Kumasi Highway needs urgent fixes, Analyst warns
Road safety concerns on the Accra-Kumasi highway cannot wait for a future expressway project that may take years to complete, Energy Analyst Kwadwo Poku has argued.
His comments come amid renewed public discussion about the condition of one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors following recent crashes and traffic disruptions on the route.
According to Mr Poku, while a modern expressway would be beneficial in the long term, motorists currently depend on the existing highway and need immediate improvements to make travel safer.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he questioned the decision to present the proposed expressway as the primary response to accidents occurring on the road today, noting that construction could take between six and eight years.
He suggested government should pursue a dual-track approach by rehabilitating the current highway while advancing plans for the new expressway.
Mr Poku said countries such as India provide motorists with both tolled expressways and alternative routes, allowing drivers to choose between faster premium roads and conventional highways.
He also expressed doubts about the timeline being suggested for the project, arguing that key preparatory processes must be completed before construction can move at full scale.
For now, he maintained, improving the condition of the existing Accra-Kumasi road remains the most practical step toward reducing accidents and easing the burden on thousands of commuters who use the route every day.
