Sammy Gyamfi’s lawyers threaten lawsuits over GoldBod allegations
A legal showdown may be looming over claims circulating online that attempt to link Sammy Gyamfi to an alleged financial scandal involving the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The politician’s lawyers have issued a formal warning to media organisations, bloggers and social media users, signalling their readiness to pursue legal action against anyone who continues to publish or repeat the allegations.
At the centre of the dispute are reports claiming that a man identified as Dominic Bonsu, described in some publications as being connected to Mr Gyamfi, absconded with GH¢200 million belonging to GoldBod.
Mr Gyamfi’s legal team says the allegations have no factual basis and are damaging to their client’s reputation. According to the lawyers, attempts to portray the named individual as a bodyguard, associate or representative of the politician are entirely inaccurate.
The notice goes beyond a simple denial. It argues that continued circulation of the claims could expose publishers to significant legal consequences, including claims for damages and court orders restraining further publication.
The lawyers also challenged what they describe as efforts to create a connection between Mr Gyamfi and the allegations through references to a business entity linked to the named individual. They maintain that any regulatory relationship between a private company and GoldBod cannot be interpreted as evidence of a personal or professional relationship with their client.
In the notice, the legal team insists Mr Gyamfi has never engaged, employed or worked with the individual at the centre of the controversy and rejects suggestions that he had any involvement in the alleged disappearance of public funds.
The warning marks the most forceful response yet from the politician’s camp since the allegations emerged online, raising the prospect of defamation suits if the claims continue to be repeated.
For now, the lawyers say all parties disseminating the allegations have been put on notice, with legal proceedings expected against any person or organisation that ignores the demand to cease publication.
