Woman jailed for life over fatal stabbing of husband

A domestic dispute that unfolded before dawn in an Accra suburb nearly five years ago has ended with a life sentence for a mother of two after a High Court found her responsible for the death of her husband.

Lydia Aboagye was handed the mandatory life sentence after a jury returned a majority guilty verdict in the murder trial arising from the death of Kweku Gyasi in November 2021.

The decision followed a full hearing in which prosecutors sought to prove that a quarrel between the couple escalated into a deadly confrontation inside their rented room at Omanjor.

Court proceedings heard that the victim suffered a fatal stab wound during the altercation. Prosecutors argued that the injury was inflicted with a broken bottle and that attempts were later made to conceal evidence linked to the incident.

The case drew attention not only because it involved a married couple raising two children, but also because neighbours and the landlord became key figures in the aftermath of the attack.

Evidence presented during the trial indicated that unusual sounds from the room prompted concern among residents in the compound. When the door was eventually forced open, Gyasi was discovered severely injured and lying in blood. Efforts to save him proved unsuccessful after he was rushed to hospital.

Investigators later built their case around witness testimony, events surrounding the couple’s confrontation and actions allegedly taken after the stabbing.

After hearing final arguments, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons directed the jury to consider the evidence before them. The seven-member panel subsequently returned a 5-2 majority verdict, meeting the legal threshold required for a conviction.

When invited to make a statement before sentencing, Aboagye offered no mitigation. The court then imposed a life sentence and informed her of her right to challenge the conviction at the Court of Appeal within the stipulated period.

The judgment brings to a close a case that has moved through Ghana’s criminal justice system since the fatal incident in 2021, highlighting the tragic consequences that can arise from domestic conflicts that spiral into violence.
