Five feared dead, several injured in Ofankor tipper truck-bus crash

Five people are feared dead and several others seriously injured after a tipper truck crashed into a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The collision severely damaged the Sprinter bus, leaving several passengers trapped inside and prompting an extensive rescue operation.

According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene to free trapped passengers and assist survivors.

Five fatalities have so far been confirmed, while several other victims sustained serious injuries.

The severity of the crash has required a major rescue effort, with emergency responders working to remove injured passengers from the wreckage and transport them to health facilities. One female victim, reportedly with both legs severed in the crash, was taken away from the scene by ambulance.

The GNFS described the situation as volatile as firefighters and other emergency personnel worked to safely extricate victims and manage the rescue operation.

The final casualty figures were yet to be determined at the time of reporting, as rescue efforts were still underway.

The accident has also caused significant traffic disruption along the highway, with movement on the main carriageway temporarily restricted to allow emergency teams to work.

The GNFS has advised motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and approach the area with extreme caution.

Drivers have also been urged to give way to emergency vehicles and remain alert around the ongoing rescue operation as authorities work to clear the wreckage and assist affected passengers.
