Gov’t spends GH¢23.1bn to clear road arrears, fund big push projects
The government has spent GH¢23.1 billion as of the end of July to settle arrears owed road contractors and finance projects under the Big Push infrastructure programme, Roads and Highways Minister Kwami Governs Agbodza has disclosed.
He made the disclosure during President John Dramani Mahama’s inspection of the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu Road project as part of the President’s two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper East Region.
Mr Agbodza said the amount was released following the President’s directive and included payments to Big Push contractors as well as the settlement of outstanding arrears.
According to him, a significant portion of the GH¢23.1 billion went towards clearing inherited debts owed contractors, which he said could make President Mahama the leader to have settled the largest share of road sector arrears in Ghana’s history.
The Minister stressed that the government was not only completing projects inherited from the previous administration but was also initiating new infrastructure projects.
He said several road challenges across constituencies and districts in the Upper East Region were being addressed, with more projects expected to resume in the coming months as contractors return to construction sites.
Mr Agbodza also expressed confidence that MyTurn, the contractor working on the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu Road, would complete the project ahead of schedule.
The road serves as an important link between Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital, and Wa, the Upper West Regional capital.
