Parts of Accra to experience power interruption on Sunday
The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) has announced an emergency power outage in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 16, 2026, to allow engineers to replace a damaged transmission tower along the Tema–Achimota 161kV line at Ashaiman.
GRIDCo said the tower was damaged when a fuel tanker caught fire and exploded while welding work was being carried out on the vehicle within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW).
The company explained that the emergency repair will require an interruption in power supply from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to ensure the damaged structure is safely replaced and the transmission line restored.
GRIDCo apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience and appealed for their patience and cooperation while the restoration work is carried out.
The company also warned individuals, businesses and other entities against occupying or carrying out unauthorised activities within transmission line corridors.
It cited the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, which prohibit activities such as unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, lorry parks, shops and garages within protected areas.
GRIDCo stressed that transmission line Rights-of-Way are not meant for unrestricted occupation or commercial activities.
The company further disclosed that, following a directive from Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, all persons and businesses occupying transmission line corridors without authorisation have been given one month to vacate.
After the deadline, GRIDCo said it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, relevant state institutions and security agencies to enforce the regulations and remove unauthorised structures and activities from the protected corridors.
