Ecuadorian anti-narcotics officers have seized a large cocaine shipment worth millions of dollars on international markets after uncovering drugs hidden inside a truck near the country’s northern border.
The operation, carried out following intelligence received by police, resulted in the confiscation of approximately 369 kilograms of cocaine and the arrest of a suspect believed to be connected to the transportation of the narcotics.
What drew particular attention from investigators was the packaging used for the drugs. Several of the seized parcels reportedly carried images of Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland.
Police did not explain the specific reason for the footballer’s image appearing on the packages. However, security experts note that international drug trafficking networks frequently use pictures, symbols or names associated with celebrities, athletes and public figures to identify shipments, indicate ownership or distinguish products linked to particular criminal groups.
According to authorities, officers became suspicious of a truck travelling along the Pan-American Highway near Ecuador’s border with Colombia. A subsequent search uncovered dozens of packages concealed within a specially constructed compartment inside the vehicle.
Video released by police showed officers removing the packages from the hidden section of the truck, revealing labels bearing the image of the Norwegian football star.
The suspect arrested during the operation was identified by authorities as a woman carrying Colombian identification documents. Investigations are continuing to determine the intended destination of the shipment and whether other individuals were involved.
Officials estimate the value of the drugs would have risen dramatically as they moved through international trafficking routes, reaching more than $11 million on the United States market and significantly higher figures in Europe.
Ecuador has become a major transit point in the global cocaine trade because of its strategic location between Colombia and Peru, the world’s largest cocaine-producing countries. Authorities say criminal groups operating in Ecuador often work alongside foreign cartels to move narcotics to North America and Europe.
The latest seizure forms part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking. Ecuadorian police report that tens of tonnes of narcotics have already been intercepted this year as security forces intensify efforts against organised criminal networks operating across the country.
