A major anti-narcotics operation in the Upper East Region has led to the arrest of 14 people suspected of being involved in the production and distribution of illegal drugs.
The arrests were carried out at Daliga in the Nabdam District after intelligence gathered by security agencies pointed to the existence of a suspected drug cultivation and supply network operating in the area.
Police say the operation was conducted jointly by the Police Intelligence Directorate and the recently established Black Cobra Team, which was created to support intelligence-led crime-fighting efforts.
During the exercise, investigators uncovered quantities of suspected narcotic substances hidden among sacks of harvested crops. Security officials believe the suspects used agricultural activities as a cover for their alleged operations.
Preliminary findings indicate that suspected cannabis plants were cultivated alongside food crops such as maize and millet, a method investigators say may have been intended to reduce the chances of detection by law enforcement officers.
Authorities further suspect that the operation extended beyond cultivation, with the group allegedly serving as a source of supply for drug dealers operating in different parts of the Upper East Region.
The raid forms part of an intensified campaign by the Regional Police Command to dismantle narcotics networks and disrupt the movement of illicit drugs across the region.
Police have identified several of the suspects and say investigations are ongoing to determine the full scale of the alleged operation, including possible links to other individuals involved in the trade.
All suspects remain in custody and are expected to be processed for court as investigations progress.
The Police have meanwhile urged residents to support the fight against illegal drugs by volunteering information that could help uncover similar activities in their communities.
Authorities also indicated that further intelligence-led operations are expected as security agencies continue efforts to curb the cultivation, trafficking and sale of narcotic substances in the region.
