KATH records decline in maternal deaths in the first half of 2026
The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recorded a significant decline in institutional maternal deaths during the first half of 2026.
The hospital recorded 55 maternal deaths between January and June 2026, down from 78 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025.
The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, disclosed the figures during the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference.
He attributed the improvement to targeted clinical mentorship and capacity-building programs delivered to peripheral health facilities in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate.
According to Dr Baidoo, the initiatives were designed to improve the quality of clinical care and strengthen the referral system from district and regional hospitals, particularly in the area of maternal health.
The programmes had contributed to better care and more effective referrals from health facilities that refer patients to KATH. He noted.
He added that, the hospital surpassed several of its operational targets during the first six months of the year.
On infrastructure, he highlighted the completion of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Center, which is expected to begin operations this month.
The hospital has also commenced operations at its Main Dialysis Centre, while a GH¢2.2 million renovation of Doctors’ Flats Block J has been completed.
Construction is also ongoing on a specialist Oncology and Nephrology facility, which is expected to further expand the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized care.
Dr Baidoo said the various projects and interventions form part of KATH’s broader efforts to strengthen specialist healthcare delivery and improve outcomes for patients.
