President John Dramani Mahama has endorsed efforts by aviation authorities to stop workers at the Accra International Airport from soliciting tips from passengers and visitors, describing the practice as harmful to Ghana’s image.
Speaking on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Purpose Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex, President Mahama said airport staff play an important role in shaping visitors’ perceptions of the country.
He noted that, the conduct of immigration officers, baggage handlers, traffic management personnel and other service providers can determine the first and last impression international travelers form of Ghana.
“The airport is one of the first points of contact for many visitors, and the professionalism and courtesy displayed there reflect on the country as a whole,” he said.
President Mahama commended the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant agencies for taking action against airport workers who demand tips from passengers.
He said the practice falls below the standards Ghana should present to visitors and urged all airport personnel to demonstrate greater discipline, professionalism and hospitality.
The President’s comments follow the dismissal of two car park workers by the Ghana Airports Company Limited over allegations that they solicited tips from passengers.
Meanwhile, the new airport development project is expected to expand facilities at the Accra International Airport. It will include two hotels, more than 2,000 parking spaces and a pedestrian walkway linking the car park to the terminal.
The project will also feature a shopping mall, food court, retail shops, office spaces, a sky lounge and a sky observatory for visitors to view aircraft operations.
Authorities say the development is part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance the experience of passengers and visitors at Ghana’s main international airport.
