Over 10 students arrested after Okuapeman-Mount Sinai SHS clash
More than 10 students have been arrested following violent clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The arrests came after retaliatory attacks involving students of the two schools led to the burning and destruction of several structures on both campuses in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, said some students fled their schools when the police arrived, but stressed that their absence would not prevent authorities from tracking them down.
“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said, adding that the police were compiling a comprehensive list of individuals suspected to have participated in the violence.
The Regional Police Commander also disclosed that investigations had uncovered allegations that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack their counterparts.
According to him, the police have identified teachers who are allegedly connected to the incident and will arrest them if investigations confirm their involvement.
“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” DCOP Owusu-Bempah warned.
He assured the public that anyone found to have taken part in the violence would face the appropriate legal consequences.
He also urged students to return to school and cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation, while cautioning against any attempts to interfere with the police process.
At Okuapeman SHS, six students sustained injuries during the clashes and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The school’s headmaster said four of the injured students had been treated and discharged, while two others remained hospitalised as of Wednesday.
The exact cause of the confrontation has not yet been established. Police investigations are ongoing to determine what triggered the clashes and identify all persons responsible for the violence.
