WAEC cancels results of 8,295 candidates over WASSCE irregularities

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cancelled the subject or entire examination results of 8,295 candidates following investigations into various irregularities recorded during the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Council said the subject results of 7,434 candidates were cancelled after they were found to have taken foreign materials, including prepared notes, textbooks and other printed materials, into examination halls.

WAEC also cancelled the entire results of 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones in the examination halls.

Meanwhile, the subject results of 957 candidates have been withheld, while the entire results of an additional 270 candidates have also been withheld over various suspected examination offences.

The decisions were reached following investigations considered at the 42nd Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee held on Friday, August 7, 2026.

Results from 169 schools remain under investigation

WAEC further disclosed that some subject results of candidates from 169 schools had been withheld over suspected cases of collusion.

According to the Council, investigations into those cases are still ongoing. The affected results could either be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations.

WAEC expects the investigations to be completed by October 30, 2026.

Candidates can check reasons for cancelled or withheld results

Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld have been directed to access WAEC’s irregularity and investigations platform to determine the reasons for the decisions and learn about the next steps.

The Council has also cautioned candidates and other stakeholders against fraudsters who claim they can upgrade examination results in exchange for money.

WAEC reiterated that its examination results are securely protected and can be authenticated through its results verification system.
