Police arrest 32 suspects in nationwide robbery crackdown
The Ghana Police Service has arrested 32 suspects in a series of intelligence-led operations targeting alleged robbery syndicates, violent crime and murder cases across the country. Police say firearms, ammunition, vehicles and other items were recovered during the operations.
The arrests cover cases involving alleged attacks on bank customers in Greater Accra, gold dealers and mining communities in the Western Region, mobile-money vendors in the Northern Region, and travellers along the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
In Greater Accra, police said they disrupted a suspected gang that allegedly monitored customers after bank withdrawals and used master keys to open vehicles. The group was linked to the reported theft of GH¢50,000 from a woman at Agbamame in Tema Community 2 in May. One suspect, 49-year-old Augustine Okechukwu Mazi, has been remanded in custody.
Five suspects were also arrested in the Western Region over alleged attacks on gold-dealer shops, mining sites and communities around Wasa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abufo Camp and Demaso. Police recovered three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of ammunition and two vehicles.
In the Northern Region, three suspects were arrested over armed-robbery cases in Bupe, Tamale and Mion, including the robbery and murder of a mobile-money vendor near Damango Junction. Police said a 14-year-old was allegedly used by the group as a lookout.
The police also named Abraham Awendok, 32, as a suspect in the disappearance and alleged murder of Dr Jesse Amoah and his wife, Elizabeth Amwa Esi.
Investigations are continuing, with police pursuing other suspects believed to be at large. All those arrested are presumed innocent unless found guilty by a court.
