12-year-old crash survivor appeals for help after losing both legs
More than a month after the devastating Ofankor-Pokuase crash that claimed 12 lives, a 12-year-old survivor is pleading for support as she battles to rebuild her life.
Angelina Stickings remains on admission at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital after suffering injuries that led to the amputation of both legs in the August 13 accident. The crash also claimed the life of her father, although relatives have not yet disclosed the news to her as she continues her recovery.
The tragedy has compounded the family’s grief, coming just six months after the death of Angelina’s mother.
Confined to a hospital bed and facing an uncertain future, the schoolgirl says her greatest wish is to recover, regain her mobility and return to the classroom.
“I need you guys to help me. Right now my stomach is paining me… I am suffering in this hospital. You guys need to help us,” she said in an emotional appeal.
Her brother, John Stickings, said the family is struggling to cope with the mounting cost of treatment and is now seeking assistance to secure prosthetic limbs that could help Angelina walk again.
According to him, Angelina frequently speaks about returning to school, making the search for support even more urgent.
“We are preparing to do the leg, because sometimes she complains that she wants to go to school again. We need the government to support us. Any support to make my sister walk again,” he said.
While the family focuses on her recovery, investigations into the crash are continuing. The National Road Safety Authority says the driver of the tipper truck believed to have triggered the collision has been arrested after initially leaving the scene and is assisting police with inquiries.
Road safety officials have also called on charitable organisations, philanthropists and members of the public to support survivors of the crash, stressing that many continue to face significant medical, financial and psychological challenges in the aftermath of the tragedy.
