Education Ministry grants extra week for SHS placement corrections

Thousands of students still facing challenges with their Senior High School placements have been given additional time to resolve their cases after the Ministry of Education extended the 2026 placement exercise by one week.

The decision comes just days before first-year students are expected to report to school on September 18, with education authorities working to clear outstanding placement and self-placement issues.

Officials say the extension will particularly benefit candidates who have not yet secured schools through the self-placement process as well as those seeking adjustments to their residential status.

According to the Ministry, more than 33,000 students have already completed self-placement out of nearly 54,000 candidates who were required to select schools through the process.

Authorities also report progress at the various resolution centres established nationwide to handle placement complaints. Of the almost 10,000 cases submitted, over 4,500 have so far been resolved.

The Ministry has directed all resolution centres to continue operating throughout the week to assist students and parents seeking support.

Press Secretary to the Education Minister, Hashmin Mohammed, expressed optimism that the remaining cases would be significantly reduced before schools reopen, allowing more students to begin the academic year without delays.

The extension is expected to ease pressure on affected families while giving education officials additional time to address unresolved placement concerns across the country.
