‘We were missing five or six players as well’- Renard dismisses Ghana’s complaints
Ivory Coast coach Hervé Renard says Ghana’s missing players should not be used to explain the Black Stars’ 2-0 defeat in Bouaké, arguing that the Elephants were also without several members of their squad.
Speaking after the AFCON 2027 qualifier, Renard brushed aside discussions about Ghana’s absentees and insisted the result was what mattered.
“Why the players are not around, key Ghanaian players, this is not my issue. This is your problem, I would say.”
The French coach noted that Ivory Coast also entered the match with a depleted squad.
“We were missing five or six players as well. So we won this game and that’s all.”
Goals from Malick Yalcouyé and Franck Kessié secured victory for the hosts, who made a strong start to their qualifying campaign.
Renard also rejected attempts to attach excuses to the outcome, maintaining that his side deserved the result.
“It was the first game for the qualifiers of Africa Cup of Nations 2027. The result is good for us.”
“Now if you want to discuss about your players, we are not there about the penalty. For me, so many excuses.”
The victory gives Ivory Coast an early advantage in the qualification race, while Ghana will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
