The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) is expected to reopen to continuing students next week, following its temporary closure in August 2026.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, said preparations were at an advanced stage to enable continuing students to return to school and resume academic activities.
The school was temporarily closed to continuing students on August 5 following disturbances on campus. The unrest occurred after some students attacked the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations that he impregnated a female student, terminated the pregnancy and buried the foetus.
First-year students, however, have been on campus since September 18, when they reported for the academic year.
The GES said additional information regarding the reopening would be provided when necessary.
In a related development, Mr Abdulai has been interdicted over allegations of sexual misconduct as investigations continue.
The Police have arrested him, taken his statement and granted him self-recognisance bail. The case docket has since been forwarded to the Attorney-General for advice.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has requested that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
