Dr. Sena Kpeglo-Freiku, the Executive Secretary of the Association of Vice Chancellors Ghana, has raised concerns about the ongoing delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. She warned that the delay could significantly disrupt university academic calendars and impact students, universities, and families across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on Thursday, December 26, Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku emphasized the urgency of resolving the financial issues between the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and relevant stakeholders, which have reportedly stalled the results’ release.
The delay stems from a funding shortfall that has hindered WAEC’s ability to finalize and publish the examination results. Reports indicate that outstanding payments owed to WAEC by government bodies have affected the Council’s operations, leaving universities and prospective students in limbo.
“Most universities had planned to welcome first-year students by the second or third week of January,” Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku stated. “The admission process itself is a time-intensive exercise involving result analysis, programme assignments, and finalizing placements. With the delays, even if the results are released soon, the process could be pushed into February or later.”
She explained that this would create a ripple effect, disrupting academic calendars and reducing effective teaching and learning time. Dr. Kpeglo-Freiku stressed the need for a definitive timeline for the results’ release, adding, “Universities must know when to expect them so they can reorganize their admission processes and schedules. The current uncertainty is not sustainable and is causing undue anxiety for all involved.”
