Parliamentary committee chairmen from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are urging the party to retain its current parliamentary leadership as it transitions to the Minority in the 9th Parliament.
They believe maintaining experienced leaders, such as Alexander Afenyo-Markin, would strengthen the party’s representation and effectiveness in opposition, particularly after the party’s reduced numbers following the recent elections.
Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, Chairman of the Education Committee and MP for Fanteakwa North, emphasized the importance of continuity. He noted that the dwindling numbers require experienced leadership to face the majority’s significant presence. Asiamah stressed that the current leadership’s tenure in the Majority has equipped them with valuable skills to navigate the complexities of opposition.
Other committee leaders echoed these sentiments. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, Chairman of the Trade and Industry Committee and MP for Tema West, expressed confidence in the current leadership’s ability to represent the party’s interests effectively. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a united and experienced caucus to ensure a purposeful approach to legislative duties.
The chairmen also acknowledged the need to address a vacancy left by Hon. Alex Tetteh, who will not return to Parliament. They suggested that the party’s council should appoint a suitable replacement while preserving the existing leadership structure.
