The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended 184 members in the Yendi constituency over breaches of the party’s constitution. The decision, effective December 26, 2024, was unanimously reached during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting held on December 23, 2024.
The meeting included Constituency Executives, the Council of Elders, the Council of Patrons, and the Disciplinary Committee Members. Alhaji Baba Gazali, the NPP Chairman for Yendi, announced the suspensions and informed the National and Regional leadership, as well as the general public.
The suspensions followed numerous complaints from party members against the affected individuals, which were thoroughly investigated. The allegations included standing as independent candidates against the party’s elected parliamentary candidate, supporting independent candidates, declaring allegiance to another political party, and refusing to work for the NPP during the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections.
The leadership invoked constitutional provisions stipulating that members who stand as independent candidates or support other political parties automatically forfeit their membership. Furthermore, members may be suspended pending an inquiry by the Disciplinary Committee, with the possibility of expulsion if found guilty of misconduct.
The NPP emphasized the need for unity and strict adherence to the party’s constitution, particularly during this challenging post-election period. The leadership reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and fostering cohesion within the party as it addresses these internal issues.
