Calm has been restored in Ejura after a mob attacked the local police station in the early hours of Saturday, January 11, 2025. The Ghana Police Service confirmed the incident, which resulted in the destruction of the police station and several vehicles.
The unrest began after the arrest of a suspect on Friday night, January 10, 2025, over allegations of theft. The suspect was detained in police custody but later complained of illness around 2:20 am and was rushed to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, the suspect passed away while receiving treatment.
As preparations were underway to transfer the body to the morgue for autopsy, some members of the Ejura community stormed the police station, setting it ablaze. The mob then moved to the hospital and forcibly took possession of the deceased’s body.
Police efforts, including engagements with community leaders and de-escalation strategies, successfully restored order. The Ghana National Fire Service intervened to extinguish the fire at the police station, and military personnel later joined to maintain peace in the area. No casualties were reported during the unrest.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure justice is served.
