During his ministerial vetting, Haruna Iddrisu announced a major policy initiative to refund admission fees for first-year students in public tertiary institutions. This initiative, which stems from a promise made by President John Mahama, is aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and their families while increasing access to higher education across the country.
The policy is estimated to require GH₵345 million to fully implement. This amount will be used to reimburse students who have already paid their admission fees for the current academic year. The program is initially targeted at students undertaking general courses in public universities, but there are plans to extend it over time to cover private tertiary institutions and other programs.
Parents who can afford to pay the fees are encouraged to continue doing so, as the program is designed to provide relief for those who need it most. The government has expressed its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Finance to mobilize the necessary funds to make the program a success.
In addition to the refund program, the government has indicated its intention to gradually expand this policy in the coming years, ensuring that more students benefit from the initiative. This program reflects the government’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and investing in the future of the nation by empowering its youth through education.
