NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called off a planned two-day tour of the North East Region following a violent attack on a military convoy in Bawku that has sharply raised security concerns across the corridor.
The “Thank You Tour,” designed as a post-election appreciation visit to party supporters across the region, was scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 29, with stops in Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu, before continuing April 30 through Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi. All six constituencies will now have to wait, with no replacement dates announced.
A senior member of the Regional Security Council confirmed to JoyNews that the suspension followed consultations with security agencies, who advised against proceeding after assailants attacked a military escort convoy in Binduri, an incident that has amplified existing tensions in an already volatile area.
“Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to avoid the trip and focus on finding a lasting solution to these issues,” the source said, adding: “We cannot downplay the situation, but there are other equally important engagements.”
The Bawku area has seen recurring bouts of violence in recent times, with the latest attack on military personnel pushing security agencies to tighten measures across parts of both the North East and Upper East regions.
The cancellation has left many supporters disappointed, having already made preparations to receive the NDC chairman across the six constituencies. Party leadership has yet to communicate when the tour will be rescheduled, while residents have been urged to remain calm as authorities continue to assess the situation on the ground.
