During his ministerial vetting on Monday, January 20, 2025, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister-designate for Trade and Industry, dismissed claims that former President John Dramani Mahama intends to cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy if re-elected. He assured the committee that Mahama is fully committed to expanding and improving the program.
“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no option to cancel Free SHS. Even during his campaign, he stated clearly that he would expand Free SHS,” Haruna emphasized.
Iddrisu clarified that Mahama aims to strengthen the educational policy in line with Articles 25 and 38 of the 1992 Constitution, which promote equitable and accessible education for all. He added, “The important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS policy to a review to enhance its effectiveness.”
The Free SHS policy, introduced in 2017 under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government, guarantees free tuition, textbooks, and meals for all students attending public senior high schools. While the initiative has significantly increased access to education for Ghanaian children, it has faced criticism over funding challenges, overcrowding, and logistical issues.
Rumors that Mahama would scrap the program gained traction during political campaigns, with opponents accusing him of being against Free SHS. However, Mahama consistently maintained that his administration would review and address the policy’s shortcomings to ensure its sustainability.
Haruna Iddrisu’s comments reaffirm Mahama’s position, dispelling doubts and emphasizing the commitment to equitable education for all Ghanaians.
