Professor Gyampo calls for arrest of MPs involved in parliamentary clash

Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, to take swift action against Members of Parliament (MPs) involved in the destruction of property during a recent clash in Parliament.

The incident unfolded when the Majority insisted on continuing a vetting session past 10 pm, which the Minority vehemently opposed. What started as a disagreement quickly escalated into chaos, with tables and microphones being damaged, leading to police intervention.

Prof. Gyampo took to Facebook on Friday, January 31, urging IGP Dampare to uphold the law by holding MPs accountable. He pointed out that in the past, government officials and MPs have been arrested for minor offenses like traffic violations. He stressed that MPs involved in the destructive behavior should face similar consequences.

“Dear IGP Dampare, you have arrested Government Officials and MPs for traffic offenses before. Ghanaians demand that every member of Parliament who destroyed State Property is arrested and dealt with according to the law,” he wrote.

Gyampo’s stance highlights the need for MPs to be held to the same standards as any other citizens when it comes to respecting state property.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has defended his side’s position, accusing the Majority of trying to intimidate them during the heated session.
