Chaos erupts in Parliament as Majority and Minority clash over ministerial vetting
Tensions erupted during a session of Ghana’s Parliamentary Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, as members of the Majority and Minority caucuses clashed over the vetting of ministerial nominees Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The disagreement led to chaos, disrupting the proceedings and forcing an abrupt adjournment.
The altercation began when the Minority side proposed rescheduling the vetting of the two nominees to Friday, arguing that the sitting had extended past 10 PM and that an earlier agreement had been reached to vet only four nominees before adjourning. The Majority caucus, however, opposed the move, insisting on proceeding as scheduled.
As tensions rose, Minority members disrupted the session, overturning tables and damaging microphones in a bid to prevent the process from continuing. Security personnel, including police officers, had to intervene to separate the feuding factions and restore order.
Despite the chaotic scenes, the Majority remained resolute, arguing that the committee was following its established schedule. However, the impasse stalled proceedings, making it impossible to continue the vetting process.
Ultimately, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga adjourned the session, announcing that the committee would reconvene the next day to resume its work.
