The ongoing water crisis in the Northern and Savannah Regions has heightened demands for government intervention, with an estimated $300 million required to resolve the issue in Tamale, Yendi, and Damongo.
According to Citi Newsroom, Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company (GWC), disclosed during his maiden visit to the Northern Region that the government is actively working to secure funding for the project.
“The total funding required is about $302 million—$50 million for Damongo, $223 million for Tamale, and $30 million for Yendi. Although the amount is significant, I believe with the president’s determination, this project can be realized,” he explained.
To mitigate the immediate water challenges, Mutawakilu directed the Chief Manager of GWC for the Northern Region to implement a water rationing schedule to ensure equitable distribution across affected areas.
During his visit, the MD also inspected the Dalun Water Intake Point and treatment plant, while paying courtesy calls on traditional leaders, including the Dalun Lana, Naa Mohammed Mustapha, and Dakpema Chief Bawa Fuseini.
