The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has submitted a motion to the Accra High Court requesting a review of the bail terms set for him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Legal representatives of Wontumi filed the application on May 30th, challenging EOCO’s GH¢50 million bail term.
They argue that the amount is unreasonably high and designed to block his release from custody, petitioning the court to reevaluate the bail conditions, citing reasons detailed within the supporting affidavit.
A hearing for this motion is set for June 3, 2025.
In related developments, lead attorney Andy Appiah-Kubi stated that all required paperwork for the two sureties has been finalized, acknowledging substantial backing from Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi, however, confirmed that despite having met all bail conditions, his client will not be going home yet due to a fresh legal application filed earlier on Friday.
He noted that the legal team is working to resolve the new court matter and expressed hope that the issue could be cleared by Monday, which would pave the way for Chairman Wontumi’s release.
“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he said.
“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us.”
The lawyer explained that while EOCO officials were prepared to conduct inspections of the properties offered by the sureties immediately, the unresolved court application creates a legal barrier preventing further action until it is settled.
“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge that I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he explained.
He also addressed questions regarding Chairman Wontumi’s location, countering previous statements by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had suggested that Wontumi’s whereabouts are unknown.
On his client’s well-being, the Appiah-Kubi dismissed rumours concerning a hunger strike and confirmed that Wontumi is under appropriate medical supervision.
“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult, to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd, to get the Vice President to see him and talk to him. So, we had to take him back,” he recounted.
“I told you that his condition of health requires attention. So, he’s receiving attention and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health.”
The lawyer expressed confidence that resolving the outstanding court application would ensure Chairman Wontumi’s release on Monday.
