Ghana has presented its highest national honour, the Order of the Star of Ghana to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to the country. The award was given at a state banquet hosted by President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over 30 years. Prime Minister Modi said the award is a reminder of the strong cultural and economic ties between India and Ghana. He also described it as a responsibility to deepen cooperation and support Ghana’s development goals.
During the visit, the two countries signed four new agreements covering cultural exchange, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, trade standards and structured ministerial dialogue. They also agreed to upgrade their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, which is expected to promote closer collaboration in key sectors such as technology, health, agriculture and infrastructure.
President Mahama praised Prime Minister Modi as “a global statesman of transformational leadership,” noting his role in reshaping India’s digital economy and promoting South-South cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Ghana, especially in areas like youth training, healthcare, digital technology, defence and mining. He also expressed strong interest in the Feed Ghana programme and pledged to expand development support.
As part of his visit, the Prime Minister met with members of the Indian community in Ghana, which is estimated at about 15,000 people. He encouraged them to help strengthen relations between the two countries and announced new scholarships and training programmes for Ghanaian youth at Indian institutions.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to depart Accra on the morning of Thursday, July 3, heading to Trinidad and Tobago before attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil.
