The Bank of Ghana has reported a decline in passenger arrivals at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), with a year-on-year decrease of 10.3% recorded in March 2025.
The airport welcomed 98,146 passengers during the month, dropping from the 109,380 arrivals recorded in March 2024.
Despite the decline, the report highlighted that there was a slight month-on-month increase in tourist arrivals, which rose by 2.2%. Over the first quarter of 2025, total arrivals at KIA and land borders totaled 295,415, marking a 4.1% drop compared to the 308,024 arrivals registered during the same period in 2024.
However, international trade activities at Ghana’s two primary harbours – Tema and Takoradi – showed positive growth. The laden container traffic measure for both inbound and outbound shipments recorded a 22.0% year-on-year increase in container traffic, clocking 73,577 in March 2025.
Cumulatively, the total container traffic for the first quarter of 2025 increased by 20.5%, a total of 205,145 compared to the 170,245 recorded in 2024 during the same period.
This uptick in ports and harbours activity indicates a robust performance in the international trade sector, even as passenger arrivals at KIA continue to face challenges.
