Police Hospital to hold mass burial for 300 unclaimed bodies on August 11
The Police Hospital in Accra has announced plans to carry out a mass burial for 300 unidentified and unclaimed bodies currently kept in its mortuary. The burial is scheduled for August 11, 2025, following the required 21-day public notice.
In a statement, the hospital explained that the bodies include paupers, unknown former patients, abandoned corpses, and victims of accidents or crimes. The exercise is intended to ensure a dignified burial while helping the hospital manage limited mortuary space in accordance with public health guidelines.
The hospital also used the opportunity to urge the public to always carry valid national identification and to share emergency contact details with trusted relatives or friends. These measures, it noted, are critical in helping authorities identify individuals in emergencies and reduce the number of unclaimed remains.
The statement further encouraged families to regularly check on the whereabouts of their loved ones, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and persons with mental health conditions.
