The Electoral Commission (EC) says it is fully prepared to conduct the upcoming Akwatia by-election, with ballot paper printing set to begin on Wednesday, August 20.
According to the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Benjamin Bannor-Bio, said the Commission has completed all necessary arrangements, including recruitment of election officials and procurement of materials.
“On our part, we indicated that we are ready. As of now, we are going to start printing ballots from tomorrow. Recruitment has already been done. We have procured all the materials required for the elections. We are ready,” he stated.
Speaking to the media in a video posted by JoyNews on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Mr. Bannor-Bio addressed security concerns ahead of the Akwatia by-election.
He noted that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and his team had given firm assurances of a peaceful process. According to him, the police have pledged adequate deployment across the constituency to ensure that voters cast their ballots freely, without fear or intimidation.
“What can be done to raise issues concerning security, the police led by the IGP, has assured us that there will be effective security to ensure that voters go about their normal duties in a very peaceful manner. And therefore, the people should have trust in the system. Nobody is going to intimidate anybody,” he stressed.
He added that past incidents, including those reported in Abirem North, have been addressed by the police, who are determined to prevent a repeat.
Mr. Bannor-Bio emphasized that the EC is committed to delivering its mandate in a professional manner and urged political parties to abide by the rules for a successful election.
“So, for now, we are all geared towards the Akwatia by-election, and we are all hopeful that the security as explained by the police will be effective.
The Electoral Commission is also poised to ensure that we deliver our mandate in a very professional manner. We just call on the political parties to go by the rules so that we can all have a very successful by-election in Akwatia,” he concluded.
