August 6 crash was beyond human control

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has described the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives as an unavoidable national tragedy that no human effort could have reversed.

Speaking at the final funeral rites of Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, acting national deputy security coordinator and one of the victims, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said the party and government were powerless to prevent the disaster.

“If there were anything that the NDC, both in party and in government, could do to reverse this tragedy, it could have been done. But unfortunately, nothing we do can bring back Honourable Limuna,” he said.

The NDC Chairman acknowledged the deep sorrow across the nation and stressed the need to focus on supporting the bereaved families. He reminded mourners that President John Mahama had directed the establishment of a special fund for the dependents of all victims of the crash.

“What we must concentrate on is to make sure the family he left behind is catered for… That is why His Excellency the President directed the establishment of a fund to take care of the families of the victims of the August 6 disaster,” he added.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah also called for unity, urging that the solidarity seen at the funeral should become a turning point for northern cohesion and broader national cooperation.

The August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of top officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three military officers operating the aircraft.
