The Tamale Central constituency has suddenly become the heartbeat of Ghana’s political drama. Following the tragic death of sitting Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 Obuasi helicopter crash, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is preparing for one of its most competitive primaries in recent years.
Between August 22 and 24, more than ten individuals picked up nomination forms to contest the NDC primary. In total, fourteen aspirants, three women and eleven men are vying for the vacant seat ahead of the by-election slated for September 30, 2025. The crowded field reflects the constituency’s importance and the intense jockeying for political relevance in Tamale.
Yet, in the middle of this fierce race, all eyes are not only on the candidates, but on one man whose voice could decide the outcome: Haruna Iddrisu.
Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Minister for Education and one of the longest-serving MPs representing Tamale South, has emerged as the most influential figure in the politics of the Northern Region. Though he has his own constituency, his sway extends far beyond Tamale South.
Known for his generosity, charisma, and decades of service, Haruna is adored across the region. His ability to mobilize people, deliver development, and inspire loyalty has transformed him into more than just a political leader he is a kingmaker.
In Tamale Central, this means one simple truth: whichever candidate secures his blessing will likely secure the seat.
While the NDC primary is open to all, insiders argue that the race will ultimately be decided not by campaign slogans or manifestos, but by Haruna Iddrisu’s nod. His popularity and goodwill in the region are such that his endorsement could tilt the scale overwhelmingly in favor of one aspirant.
As one party supporter put it, “In Tamale Central today, the love people have for Haruna Iddrisu is enough to carry whoever he supports straight into Parliament.”
This kingmaker role adds an extra layer of intrigue to an already high-stakes contest.
The Electoral Commission has officially fixed September 30, 2025, for the Tamale Central by-election. For now, all fourteen aspirants are campaigning vigorously, but behind the scenes, their eyes remain fixed on one man.
Will Haruna Iddrisu make an endorsement? And if he does, will that candidate’s victory be as automatic as many believe?
As the contest intensifies, one thing is certain: in Tamale Central, Haruna Iddrisu holds the political key, and the outcome of this race may once again prove why he is regarded as one of the most powerful figures in northern politics.
