Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has cautioned parents, guardians, and teachers against paying money to secure placement for their wards into senior high schools following the release of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.
According to the Ketu North MP, he has been informed by the head of the Free SHS Secretariat, Hon. Benita Sena Okity-Duah, that the Secretariat will not tolerate the activities of so-called goro boys who extort money from parents and students with the promise of securing placement into Category A or B schools.
He cautioned that such practices would not be entertained this year, warning that anyone who engages in them will be arrested.
“I have been informed by the head of the Free SHS Secretariat, the Honorable Benita Sena Okity-Duah, that they will not tolerate any goro boy in the system where people go and take moneys from parents or from students promising them that they will place them in Category A or B schools.
“Those things will not be tolerated. Anyone who will engage in any of those activities will be arrested,” he stated.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Monday, 25 August 2025, he emphasized that a number of reforms have been undertaken at the Free SHS Secretariat to improve the school selection and placement system, making it transparent and fair.
“Nobody should pay money to anybody in the name of protocol placement. If your ward qualifies for the school of their choice, the system will automatically place them there,” Mr. Agbana stressed.
Mr. Agbana further disclosed that some reports of examination malpractice have led to the cancellation of entire school results and subject results.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), he said, has also assured the public that teachers found to have aided candidates in such malpractices will face prosecution.
He urged all parents and teachers to take a keen interest in checking results and guiding students in the school selection process to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
