A new poll by Global InfoAnalytics has placed Tamale South MP and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu in the lead as the race to succeed former President John Dramani Mahama as NDC flagbearer heats up.
The poll’s lead researcher, Mussa Dankwah, revealed that Haruna currently tops the list of potential successors with 27% support among party members.
Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight with Blessed Sogah on Saturday, September 21, he is followed closely by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah with 26%, while Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson sits in third with 22%.
Other names included in the July survey were Julius Debrah (11%) and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (8%).
Dankwah described the succession race as “quite strange” given that no official contest has yet been declared. He noted that the close margins between Haruna, Asiedu Nketiah, and Ato Forson highlight a highly competitive field.
The findings come as key NDC figures embark on nationwide “Thank You Tours” and “Health Walks,” activities widely seen as subtle campaign moves to court grassroots support ahead of an official contest.
Dankwah further indicated that if Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang decides to enter the race, her name would be included in future polls.
With Mahama not expected to contest again, Haruna’s early lead positions him as a frontrunner in what could be one of the most competitive flagbearer races in NDC history.
