An importer lost his life in a tragic accident at the Tema Port on Thursday evening after being crushed by a container-handling machine during offloading operations.
Witnesses say the man was standing close to a reach stacker when the heavy equipment reversed, knocking him down and trapping him underneath. Efforts by workers nearby to rescue him proved futile, as the impact left him with severe injuries that led to his death on the spot.
The incident brought activities at the Golden Jubilee Terminal to a sudden halt as port officials and emergency responders arrived to secure the area. The body was later removed while investigators began examining how the accident occurred.
Sources within the port said the deceased was an importer who had come to clear his goods when the accident happened. His identity is yet to be made public pending notification of his family.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has reportedly launched a joint investigation with the police to determine whether safety lapses or operational errors contributed to the tragedy.
The accident has sparked renewed calls for stricter safety measures within Ghana’s ports, where heavy machinery and human activity often operate side by side. Many in the port community have described the incident as a painful reminder of the need for constant vigilance and enforcement of safety rules to protect workers and visitors alike.
