President John Mahama has revealed that Ghana’s Police Service will soon be equipped with drones and covert vehicles as part of a broader plan to modernize law enforcement and enhance crime-fighting capabilities nationwide.
The announcement was made in Accra during the commissioning of 40 newly acquired armoured vehicles. According to the President, the drones will be used for urban surveillance and intelligence gathering, while the covert operational vehicles, whose details remain undisclosed, will provide discreet support for specialized missions. In addition, every police district will receive a pickup truck to bolster routine patrols.
Mahama explained that these measures form the first phase of a comprehensive retooling programme. Beyond the armoured fleet, the Police Service is expected to take delivery of tow trucks and other resources before the end of the month.
Commending the Inspector General of Police and the service’s leadership, the President praised recent strides in public safety, noting a decline in highway robberies and progress in solving previously unresolved murder cases. He attributed these successes to improved intelligence and effective policing strategies.
The President also emphasized the importance of officer safety, pledging that no police personnel would be deployed without adequate protective gear. He acknowledged that past shortcomings had led to unnecessary loss of life and assured that the government is committed to ending such risks.
President Mahama concluded by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to equipping the police with modern tools and training, ensuring that officers can carry out their duties effectively while safeguarding their own lives.
